A Quick Run Down Of The Research I Did For This Presentation Is As Follows
The codes and conventions of films about drug trips
Works which are similar to mine such as A$AP Rocky's L$D and films by Gaspar Noe such as Enter The Void
Some early recce filming locations to film my music video
Some visual references and visual inspirations which I would like to include in my music video
The Effectiveness Of My Research
The research that I conducted for the presentation such as looking at other pieces of work which are very similar to mine helped me, for example, the A$AP Rocky music video for L$D is very similar to my idea, this is because it has a strong reference to drug culture without directly referencing it, even in the lyrics Rocky represents the abbreviation as love sex dreams instead of what the actual references are. The style of this music video inspired me because it represents what it is like to be on a trip, the video shows Rocky with a girl walking around a very vibrant Tokyo in third person view, it looks as if it done to explain that the feeling of being in love is like being on the drug LSD. The visuals in this music video come from an inspiration from Gaspar Noe's feature film Enter The Void as you can see some visuals used from that film such as the neon flashing lights and the vibrant setting, from watching this music video I have been given a bigger idea of what sort of editing techniques to use such as isolating different areas of lights within a city and applying different color filters within it.
The film which inspired Rocky in parts of this music video is the film Enter The Void, the film is set in the neon-lit nightclub environments of Tokyo, the story is based on Oscar who is an American drug dealer who gets shot by the police, but continues to watch subsequent events during an out of body experience. The film is shot from a first person viewpoint, it is inspired by experimental cinema and psychedelic drug experience. This film is similar to my idea and has inspired me by its use of crazy, trippy and neon visuals. Also the idea of not being conscious and not being able to control yourself has inspired me when creating my idea about the drug trip, very similar to what i talked about in the A$AP Rocky video for L$D I can see more of an idea about what sort of visuals I would like to use such as visuals of bloodstream's when the drugs are entering the body, visuals of busy cities with neon lights all the time and the idea of having the person on a trip walking through the different situations without being conscious kind of pairs with the idea of my character walking through the situations in his mind whilst he is high to make him become like this.
The Effectiveness Of My Presentation
When I performed my presentation in front of about 6 people in my class as well as one of my teachers it went successfully well, it was very helpful seeing a full insight into what other peoples opinions and questions were about my idea, as I said in my previous blog post I talked about these things in my presentation:
Medium I will be using
Proposed idea
Visual references
Visual inspirations
Works similar to my idea
Feasibility
Early recce
Scheduling
The presentation I presented was very visual and included lots of points about my idea and I received a lot of positive feedback including that it sounds like a really gripping idea and is going to look visually amazing if i can edit it right and be able to film it at some great angles, some people also said that the locations I plan to shoot in look really good for the setting of my music video. I also had some very interesting questions as well as some critical feedback, some people told me that I need to have no drug use in the video as it could be deemed offensive as well as being a bit unethical, they also told me some re-occurring themes within the trip could work well as well as an actual clear cut of the story lines that i need to include, i have taken all of this critical feedback on board and it has helped me a great deal in actually composing my piece of work in how I go about doing my pre-production.
