SFThrowed - Froze

Log Line / USP
The logline I have chosen for my final major project is “follow one man’s emotional journey through his lowest points and his different paths of life”
I have chosen this logline because it briefly summarises what my music video is about, one man’s emotional journey explains the man’s journey through all of the problems he is having in his life to make him become like this, it will feature flashback sequences which show him having all of these bad moments, “his lowest points” explain that these are his lowest points in life, he is using escapism to get away from his problems therefore you know he is at one of his lowest points in life. The “different paths of life” basically explains how the music video is a bit bipolar in ways it shows all aspects of this one man’s emotions and his journey through them. So without ruining the entire plot of the music video I have summarised it into a log line.
Objective
For my final major project I plan to create a 4-5 minute experimental music video for my artist SFThrowed who is an experimental hip hop producer I will be using his song Froze. The music video will be about a man who is on a drug trip, it combines short film elements as well as some short film elements such as an introduction where there will be scenes of dialogue explaining the story throughout as well as a soundscape in the middle of the music video which builds up a bit of an uneasy and uncomfortable atmosphere as well as a 20 second piece of footage at the end with some uneasy and somewhat scary sounds to represent the come down from the trip. Although no drug use is seen throughout the music video, it is obvious as to what is happening.
The purpose of the music video is to showcase my final piece of work (FMP), it will combine elements of the things I like to work with such as editing techniques such as creating trippy motion graphics on after effects and creating lots of double exposure throughout the video such as putting two different scenes of footage on each other using blending modes such as lighten, darken, difference to get different effects of the exposure. Also showcasing dark themes of society such as drug and alcohol abuse as well as themes as such as people’s personal stories and what led them to bad points in their lives etc. The music video does not promote drug use in anyway as it does not show any type of drug use and most of what will be seen on screen is all negative things about drug use like this, I want to represent substance use as a completely negative thing, it is not an educational video by no means but it is not a positive representation. I want to represent the negative side of it by making my main character having no control of himself and by seeing him in all of these uncomfortable situations.
Description/Overview
The Piece
What I intend to do with this piece is to create a 4-5 minute music video for my chosen artist - psychedelic electronic hip-hop producer SFThrowed I have picked their song Froze. The music video is going to be completely experimental with some elements of narrative in the beginning, middle and end. The music video is about a man who is on a drug trip, it is going to show the completely negative side of drug use and for ethical reasons no drug use is actually going to be shown throughout the music video, it shows a man in his lowest days who is on a trip, as he is walking through all of these locations which look very stereotypical for drug use, as I have researched from the film trainspotting I have found out that drug addicts hang out in abandoned and run down/derelict houses and places similar to this. Throughout the music video the themes of his life such as how he got into this situation will come into hand, things that went wrong in his life for him to become like this, it will be paired with some very trippy visuals as well as some dark and minimalistic visuals, I will pair these with double exposure techniques with other footage filmed.
Location Details
I have been doing some early recce (location scouting) for my final piece of work and have found some locations in which I want to use. With this project I need two types of locations, I need some locations to use for when the man is walking on the drug trip, and there will be multi angles of him walking through these locations paired with the visuals, I have done some early recce and have found some really eerie locations throughout Dorset such as an abandoned milk factory located in Ferndown, the Portland Battery and Distex Centre, and there is also a few abandoned hotels throughout Dorset, I’m also going to use Weymouth town at night so that I can get some footage of lights and manipulate them so that they flash quite a lot whilst he is walking through, I have also found some fields in Osmington and Broadmayne where I am going to have some more scenes of the man walking on his trip paired with some visuals I have created. Dependant on the storylines I create I will have some more locations, but until I do some more idea development I will not know what locations to use.
Production and post production
For the production of this video I will be using locations as previously talked about and will be using two cameras and will be a shot over various different days, as well as two cameras I will be using optional tripod and Flolights as well as other experimental lighting with lighting gels and filters to get some really dark and edgy lighting such as dark red and dark green etc so that the mise en scene looks very surreal and scary. I am also going to create various sounds
capes in the middle, beginning and end of the video using the recording studio at college, this will consist of sounds such as screaming, white noise and other scary sounds, this is going to be done to make the piece even scarier, another thing I am going to experiment with is filming in the green screen studio and experimenting with different visuals.
The post production of this piece will be done using Adobe after Effects, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro, I will be creating all of the types of visuals that will be shown on screen on After Effects, I will be using a mixture of visual effects, animation and a bit of motion graphics, I will be pairing this with the footage of the man on the trip by using double exposure as well as ultra-key with the green screen footage I have gathered, I will use different techniques like drawing things and scanning them in to use, I will also be scanning in drawn textures to use as a motion graphics piece as well as using photo to film techniques. I am going to edit all of the end compositions within Adobe Premiere Pro.
