This is some more pre-production I have done, it includes key messages, post-production requirements and alot of target audience identification - ENJOY!
Key Messages
Key messages means what messages I want to give to the audience through the piece and what they take from it, key messages that they will understand and process and analyse through watching the music video.
I would like the audience to take from this that the music video is a completely experimental music video from the genre of experimental hip-hop coming from the hip hop producer SFThrowed for his song “froze”.
I want to present a negative representation of drug use and I hope that the audience take that from it, I will show it in a negative way by showing all of the bad experiences that my main character goes through, even though there are some happy emotions that the man feels when he starts the trip, it soon goes downhill and all turns negative which I want the audience to hopefully take from it.
That the music video is in no way an educational music video but is also in no way a positive representation, even though I am not trying to educate the audience I would still like them to learn something from it, and take the video and process it in whatever way they would like to.
The music video’s genre is wildly experimental, mixing in genres of drama, horror, thriller and action, these genres are perfect for the concept based music video for my song Froze by SFThrowed.
Combines editing techniques such as double exposure, motion graphics, colour correction, sound warping for the sound scape, warping pieces of video, photo to film techniques as well as using green screen and the ultra key/key light effect, I hope that the audience takes these editing techniques from it and appreciate the different techniques used throughout the music video.
I would like the audience to realise that the man is terrorized by his past experiences whilst he is on the trip and that the terrorisation is the main reason he is on the drugh trip for escapism.
I would like the audience to feel that the locations I have used, especially the derelict ones are very eerie and add a scary vibe to the whole mise-en-scene of the piece and will leave a long lasting impression on them.
With the first person shots I will use when you can see through the main characters eyes, I want the audience to feel like the experience to them is real to them and for them to feel like they have taken drugs themselves and for them to really get into this conceptual video.
I hope the audience will walk away from watching this music video and not feel like they want to take substances like LSD and DMT etc.
Target Audience Identification
Within my SWOT Analysis I listed this idea and what I thought the idea’s target audiences are, I listed:
Fans of experimental short films (I listed this when I was thinking about going down the short film route)
Fans of Experimental music videos
Fans of psychedelic short films and music videos ( I listed this when I was thinking about going down the short film route)
People who can relate to what this character has gone through, for example drug takers who have tried hallucinogenic’s such as mushrooms, LSD, DMT and more, this could be relatable for them, could also be targeted towards people who have resorted to drugs because they’ve had such a hard time.
Fans of short films ( I listed this when I was thinking about going down the short film route)
People between the ages of 16-50, this is because it is such a complicated idea for children younger than 16 to be able to analyse and it might be scary for them as well as it might be scary for the elderly over 50 years old, so if we are talking an age demographic it would be very wide but excluding the old and the young.
There is no ethnic demographic until I cast my actors.
From doing more research and thought processing I have decided that my main target audience will be people between the ages of 16-50, which is a very wide age gap but can be diversified, doesn’t have to be the exact same thing as specified, anyone can watch this who is older than the age or younger than the age. I have also picked another main target audience of hip hop fans and fans of experimental psychedelic music like the song for this music video is about, the age demographic from hip hop would be anywhere between 13-40 due to its origins throughout the 1970’s and has developed into different sub-genres throughout the years into current years, this is because children younger than 13 might be a bit young to hear explicit music and the elder generation were around when it was invented, although older audiences may be into hip hop the main demographic would be this, Hip hop acts such as Jay-z, NWA, Eminem as well as newer artists such as Drake, Future, Migos will be included in the acts they may be into. The same concept of having psychedelic music can be applied to an age demographic of about the same age range, elder people will remember psychedelic bands such as The Doors, The Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd and the Beatles as well as newer psychedelic bands such as Tame Impala and the Flaming Lips will also influence the younger generation into this type of music, so overall the age demographic for psychedelic music would be from a young age of around 14 to an older age of about 70/80 which is a very wide demographic but psychedelic has been around for a long time and still continues to reign on.
My choice for the main target audience: the target audience choice of people aged 16-50 comes from many reasons and thought processes:
The age demographic of around 16-25 from this target audience due to many reasons, because this is the age group where you get introduced to alcohol, cigarettes and in many other countries bar the UK, some drugs are available from this age, also this age group are exposed to the rave scene and peer pressure etc. so some people from this age group may have had different experiences with these substances I will be prevailing in my video, it might be somewhat relatable for them to see a video like this, uses and gratifications theory states that people watch certain types of media to relate to which is called personal identity, people from this age group can relate. I am going to attempt to make my music video to fit this audiences needs by showing drug use in a negative way as well as casting the main character as someone from this age group to show how anyone can get involved dependant on the state of mind they have, I want to show that substance abuse isn’t the only way out.
The choice of an age demographic of 25 to 50 is because they have lived in the generation where a lot of hard drugs were around and the rave scene was introduced so they would watch it to relate in the uses and gratifications theory of personal identity. Also if talking about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs this group of people would watch it for esteem needs, they might feel happy that they are no clean from these drugs or would be something to relate to within the boundaries of personal achievement.
Post Production Requirements
The Post Production elements that I will use:
Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 video editing program – I will be using this program to edit all of my video files up into order, I will also use this with combination to Adobe After Effects by having different compositions within my timeline in Premiere Pro., I will be using different effects within this program such as colour correction, blending modes within building up other layers.
Adobe Photoshop CS6 photo editing program – I will be using this program to create some motion graphics, I will then import them into after effects, I will be using adjustment layers as well as blending modes within Photoshop.
Adobe After Effects CS6 video editing program – I will use this program to create motion graphics for the visuals and use techniques such as animation, blending modes to build up layers, VFX, SFX and will be using all of this in co-ordination with Photoshop where the graphics created in Photoshop will be imported into After Effects.
The final delivery format when exported from Adobe Premiere Pro will be in a H.264 format and the composition/timeline settings will be in HDV 1080p
I will be using a college PC with an Intel Core i7 processor
